Our Lady of the Rocks
This iconic artificial island is the most famous sight in the Bay of Kotor. According to local lore, the island was made over the centuries by local sailors who kept an ancient oath after finding the icon of Madonna and Child on the rocks. They threw rocks onto the same spot until an island slowly emerged from the sea. It is easy to visit the island from Perast.
St Nikola Church
St Nikola Church is the most recognisable landmark in Perast. Its actual age is difficult to pin down; parts of the church date back to 1096 but the main structure was built in the 17th century. It boasts a 55-metre high bell tower with commanding views over the bay. If you can handle the stairs it is a must-see view.
Lake Skadar
Lake Skadar is a spectacular destination. It is the largest lake in Southern Europe and these wetlands provide an important habitat for birds. The local food is a big draw for tourists. The area around the lake is a national park and it shares a border with Albania. This bio-diverse wonderland is worth a day trip.
History
Perast's history can be dated back to the neolithic period. Perast's first written mention describes the town as a well-known fishing village.
Perast's golden age was in the Venetian period. Venice owned the city between 1420 and 1797. It is thanks to its close relationship with Venice that it has such grand baroque architecture. Amazingly this small town has sixteen Baroque palaces.
One of the biggest churches in Perast is the church of Sveti Nikola. It was built in 1691 and is in the main square.
The must-see sight is, of course, Our Lady of the Rock. It is a small man-made island just off the coast.
Perast is a wonderful place to explore on foot and take in the majestic views and history.
